Adobe Photoshop CS6 to adopt Aperture-like theme, new 3D functionality

Early betas of Photoshop CS6, an update to Adobe's flagship digital imaging software due next year as part of Creative Suite 6.0 (CS6), show off a darker interface theme, new 3D capabilities, autosave, and a handful of other tool additions, AppleInsider has learned.

A new look

According to people familiar with builds of the software compiled earlier this month, the most immediately-recognizable change to Photoshop in CS6 (version 13.0) is its darker, Aperture-like user interface (below) that replaces the mostly platinum theme found in existing versions of the software. For some, this may be an unwelcome change; that's why Adobe has reportedly -- at least in the current beta build -- provided testers with the option to revert to the old look.

In addition to the color change, the new theme also sports an assortment of spruced-up pallet icons that offer new and slightly different takes on classic designs. The changes aren't so drastic that users won't be able to find their way around, say those who've spent time with the software, but instead aim to 'freshen up' the software's legacy feel.

3D enhancements

But the real meat of Photoshop CS6, which goes by the code-name "Superstition," appears to be an assortment of new features that Adobe has proposed as enhancements to the software's 3D capabilities that emerged in earnest back with the 2008 release of Photoshop CS4.

For example, a new "3D Material Drop" tool has been added to the Paint Bucket, according to people familiar with the software. Similarly, Adobe has also added a "3D Material Eyedropper Tool" to Photoshop's Eyedropper. There's also a new "3D Text" option for text input, rounding out a trio of 3D-centric additions to the Tools palette. 

Additional 3D options are reportedly evident in the Preferences pane, where testers can presently enable or disable "Allow Direct to Screen" and "Auto-Hide Layers" options for "Interactive Rendering." There are also new "Rich Cursor" options: "Show on Hover" and "Show on Interaction."

Within the 3D preferences, testers can also modify "Axis Control," where options allow for "Invert Camera Axis" and "Separate Axis controls." Finally, a new "interactive Shadows Quality" section allows testers to choose from a range of quality options when generating shadows.

3D tools aside, early betas of Photoshop CS6 also introduced a "Remix Tool" to the healing brushes palette, joining tools such as "Spot Healing Brush," "Healing Brush," "Patch" and "Red Eye" tools. For cropping, Adobe has also added a new "Perspective Crop Tool."

Added Options

There are also a handful of other changes to the Preferences pane in the new Photoshop. In "General," users can select or deselect "HUD Vertical Movement varies Round Brush Hardness" and "Snap Vector Tools and Transforms to Pixel Grid."

Also, under the "Interface" section, new options include "Show Transformation Values" and "Enable Text Drop Shadows."

Users can also access new preferences in the "File Handling" section, where "Save in Background" has been added, along with "Automatically save Recovery Information Every:" with a choice of time intervals. New "File Compatibility" preferences include "Ignore Rotation Metadata" and "Disable Compressions of PSD and PSB Files."

Under the "Type" section of Preferences, a pair of options have been removed in the Photoshop CS6 beta: "Show Asian Text Options" and "Font Preview Size."

Given that the information on Photoshop CS6 comes from pre-release test builds of the software, it's probable that some features could be changed, removed, or added by the time the software hits the market. People familiar with the matter say Adobe is shooting for a release of Creative Suite 6.0 sometime around May of 2012.

Deblurring

Separately, Adobe has been working on a handful of prototype features that may or may not make it into future versions of Photoshop. One of these features, for correcting blurry photographs, uses a sophisticated algorithm that analyzes a photograph and then generates a "blur kernel." The kernel contains information on the motion trajectory of the camera during the shot that created the blur. 20 years after its first version, Photoshop remains a must-software in the world of professional photo editing. CS5 version brings several new landmark that should greatly facilitate certain operations. We have reviewed! 

Ubiquitous in the world of professional design, Photoshop continues to evolve roughly every two years, with more or less major improvements. What's new in this version CS5, which marks the 20th anniversary of the software? No major change in the interface: the redesign took place with CS4 which unified (more or less) different applications (including those inherited from Macromedia). However, there are some new features that simplify significantly the process of editing. We were able to see some go around the web. The most notable is of course the correction for the contents: a brush stroke and the selected object disappears, almost like magic, replaced by the surrounding textures with such precision that the removal leaves almost no trace.

Installing Photoshop CS5

With version CS5, Photoshop acquires immediately a major innovation for users of Mac software goes to the last 64 bits. The Windows version of the software already offers this support since version CS4, but Adobe had to settle for 32-bit for Mac OS X. The reason is simple: the software framework uses the "historical" Carbon, which does not support 64-bit (or rather, who do offer more: the consistency was expected, before being abandoned during road by Apple). In order to offer a 64-bit version for Mac, Adobe has the entire focus of its software to Cocoa, another framework of Mac OS X, it manages 64-bit Cocoa applications since version 10.5. 

Specifically, after installing the software, two separate versions (32-bit and 64 bit) is available on Windows. Mac OS X, otherwise have a 64-bit processor, the latter version that is started by default. To access the 32-bit version, it will go through the properties of the startup icon and select the option "Run 32-bit mode." Note that the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5 Mac (and Mac only) sees himself strangely shorn of some features, the application of light effects! 

No big changes to the installation software has always used a silent activation somewhat annoying (we like to know when something is on the internet). Policy in Adobe activation, however, is still valuable for the rest: a deactivation option is present, allowing to easily migrate an installation to another extension without any problem passing of authorizations. 

Interface

For CS4, Adobe has made a change in the interface to align the Creative Suite applications. Photoshop CS5 does not, at first, major changes: the only thing that makes us think that we have changed version is in the window buttons now look who marry Aero. However, a significant novelty frankly appeared in the sidebar on the right (along with the shortcuts to access particular types of brushes): the Mini Bridge! As the name suggests, this retractable panel provides access to its collection of photos without launching Adobe Bridge (at least without running the full interface, because the software still officiates in the background), which is extremely practice when you need a quick snapshot. The module provides access to the folder tree, but also in collections and smart collections, favorites, or recent folders and files. In short, this Mini Bridge is needed quickly! 

Apart from this change, we find roughly the interface of Photoshop CS4 and then its "all-in-one" and its multiple screen configurations adapting the palettes on the screen according to use: photography, painting and design (for web). There still access "easier" to different spaces. Nothing really breathtaking: they are arranged in line and not accessible from a menu! 

Mac, there will always choose between the default behavior, which displays all panels and toolbars in the form of separate elements, with the office permanently visible (traditional Mac OS) and a mode "piece" option that mimics the layout of the Windows version. There are also many provisions of open images, mosaics, columns, lines, full screen with tabs ... Nothing new then, but flexibility is always enjoyable for users of large screens. 

 

The pleasant little things already in version CS4, such as zoom "softened" or display a compass in the rotation of the work area are enhanced in version CS5 new additions. Note for example the overlay of a ring when using the pipette: it displays the color under the pointer, the current color, all surrounded by a neutral gray. Mac OS X, the software still runs great with multi-touch trackpads to MacBook Pro: zoom, rotate and scrolling are greatly facilitated. 

Still, this interface is still very effective indeed a sobriety test that all may seem austere to some users. This choice is of course arguable that Photoshop is an application designed for professional digital imaging: nothing should distract the user from the essential: the photo! The interface can thus less fancy than Photoshop Elements, but the latter, Adobe might be able to borrow at 

least one optional subject in shades of dark gray very pleasant in Elements or Lightroom.
